The Secret to a Longer Life? Enjoy It!

For decades, health advice has centered around strict diets, intense exercise routines, and rigid lifestyle choices. But new research from Swedish Professor Fredrik H. Nyström suggests that true well-being may lie in a more balanced approach—one that embraces enjoyment rather than restriction.

Nyström, a professor at Linköping University, argues that excessive self-denial and guilt surrounding health choices can do more harm than good. His findings indicate that mental well-being plays a crucial role in longevity, and that happiness itself may be a key factor in preventing heart disease and other health issues.

One of his more surprising conclusions is that moderate alcohol consumption, such as a daily glass of red wine, may have positive health effects—potentially even more than a green smoothie. While this challenges conventional wisdom, Nyström emphasizes that his research is not about promoting indulgence but rather questioning the moralistic approach to health advice.

“The strict view on diet and exercise often backfires,” Nyström explains. “Many health recommendations create more stress and guilt than actual benefits. Instead, balance and moderation tend to be far more effective for long-term well-being”.

His book, Lighten the Load on Your Shoulders, explores these ideas further, advocating for a more forgiving and realistic approach to health. He suggests that self-compassion and enjoyment—whether through food, relaxation, or social interactions—can contribute to a longer, healthier life.

While some experts remain skeptical, arguing that alcohol should not be recommended for health benefits, Nyström’s research highlights an important truth: happiness matters. Perhaps the best health advice is not just about what we eat or how much we exercise, but how much we truly enjoy life.

So, next time you feel guilty about indulging in life’s small pleasures, remember—a little joy might just be the best medicine!
